We know that many of you have been eagerly awaiting the launch of our next TrekFest event, however after careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision not to run TrekFest in 2022. The rapid growth in popularity of our UK events over the last 2 years, combined with the recent and very welcome return of overseas travel, means that as a post pandemic small team we need to focus on our scheduled open challenges over the next 12 months.

We know that this will be disappointing news for many of you, but we hope to see you all on a different adventure with us in 2022! Many of you will have found TrekFest through taking part in another Global Adventure Challenges event, but for those of you who have found us through TrekFest, now’s the time to get exploring our wider range of incredible events!

Katherine from Kings Lynn, is taking on TrekFest as part of Team Puffin and has kindly agreed to share her story with us!

Hi Katherine, it’s fantastic to hear you’re joining us for TrekFest in September! Who else is part of your team?

“Team Puffin is currently made up of 3 members, myself, my partner Ashley and a friend Dayton.”

That’s brilliant! Which charity are you supporting?

“We are fundraising for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Kings Lynn, Norfolk.”

Arlen (left) and Eivin (right) on the day they were born, and at six months old.

If it wasn’t for NICU, our boys wouldn’t be the happy healthy babies they are today and so this challenge is our way of raising money as a thank you for all they did for us as a family and for so many other families.

Can you tell us a bit about why you chose to support this incredible cause?

“In March 2020 Ashley and I found out we were expecting identical (mono amniotic) twins. We were referred to a specialist in London (Queen Charlotte Hospital) and were advised that because the boys shared a placenta and sac they had a 35-40% mortality rate due to cord entanglement. They could also have been delivered from 25 weeks if complications were discovered.

We had to attend scans every other week at the local hospital and one a month in London.

I attended scans alone due to COVID-19 restrictions, but despite the odds our Puffins, Arlen and Eivin were delivered at our local hospital at 33+2 weeks.

The boys spent 21 days on the NICU. They received exemplary care from the second they were born. A week of which was in high dependency in incubators on oxygen and high flow.

The NICU team took time to explain to us what treatment the boys were having, taught us how to tube feed and provided me with expressing and breast feeding support.

If it wasn’t for NICU, our boys wouldn’t be the happy healthy babies they are today and so this challenge is our way of raising money as a thank you for all they did for us as a family and for so many other families.”

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us Katherine, we’re so happy to hear that Arlen and Eivin are doing well! Wishing you all the best with your training and fundraising journey, we can’t wait to see you in the Beacons in September!

Whether you’re thinking of taking part in TrekFest 2021 or you’re already signed up to join us, we know you’ll have some questions and concerns about the impact of the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). We’d like to take this opportunity to assure you that we’re keeping a close eye on the situation and that there is no risk involved in registering for TrekFest!

The health and safety of our participants will always be our primary concern, and we will fully adhere to any guidelines from the UK Government in place at the time of the challenge. In addition, it is likely that you will see enhanced procedures on the event which may include, but not limited to:-

  • Staggered start times
  • Use of face coverings at rest stops and/or other enclosed areas
  • Hand sanitisation points
  • Social distancing
  • One-way flows at rest stops and at our TrekFest Village

We are hoping that on the back of recent news, some of the procedures that would be relevant now may not be needed come September 2021. However, in the lead up to TrekFest 2021 and much closer to the event date we will write to all participants with more detail on any new procedures that we will be implementing.

If due to official advice, safety concerns or restrictions in place at the time of the challenge, the event was unable to go ahead, all registered participants would be entitled to transfer to a future event or to receive a full refund.

If you have any further questions about the impact of COVID-19 on TrekFest, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us on 01244 676 454 or by emailing info@trekfest.org.uk.

TrekFest 2020: Challenge Update

It is with deep regret that due to the ongoing social distancing restrictions, safety concerns and other reasons brought about by COVID-19 we have no choice but to cancel this year’s TrekFest Beacons challenge, due to take place on the 19th September.

We wanted to wait as long as possible to see if there were any further positive developments with the current COVID-19 situation. We appreciate that this decision whilst maybe not surprising, will be hugely disappointing for everyone concerned, but participant safety is our priority.

There are several options open to anyone already registered on the challenge – our Customer Care team have emailed all those signed up with details on what happens next.

Once again, we’re so sorry that we’re unable to go ahead with this year’s challenge – we look forward to TrekFest every year, and love seeing so many of your faces and hearing your stories over the weekend. We hope to see you all in 2021, so you can challenge yourself and get to know your fellow trekkers while staying safe.

TrekFest The Beacons Route

The Brecon Beacons National Park is the perfect location for a trekking adventure! Full of lively market towns, picturesque walking trails and home to the mighty Pen y Fan – the UK’s highest mountain south of Snowdonia.

Join us on a Brecon Beacons hike as we take on TrekFest 2020!

TrekFest The Beacons takes us on an incredible journey through this unique National Park. Our TrekFest Village, located at The Brecon Showground, is situated in the heart of the Brecon Beacons – surrounded by rolling hills and deep forests.

We have two route options available – 25km or 50km, so whatever your experience – or whether you want to walk, jog or run TrekFest, we’ve got you covered!

Hiking in the Brecon Beacons

25km Route (15.1 miles approx.)

The start of our route takes us along quiet country lanes, before reaching our first checkpoint at approximately 9km. We then start to ascend Pen y Fan – the highest peak in South Wales at 886m. The ascent twists its way up from the valley floor and we’ll be treated to magical views of Llyn Cwm Llwch below. We’ll then reach Corn Du ridge, passing the Tommy Jones Obelisk on the way.

It’s then time for our final incline to the summit of Pen y Fan, where we will be welcomed with incredible views across the beautiful Brecon Beacons.

After a moment to enjoy our surroundings (and catch our breath), it’s then time to make our way down to our next checkpoint.  The initial descent is steep, as we head along the ridge of Cefn Cwm Llwych. After taking a moment to refuel at the checkpoint, we then make our way to the TrekFest Village, following country roads and sections of the Three Rivers Ride path.

50km Route (31 miles approx.)

Our 50km challenge begins by following the same route as the 25km. Upon reaching the summit of Pen y Fan, we then head to the peak of Fan y Big, one of the four main peaks of the Brecon Beacons. We then descend to our checkpoint and enjoy a well-deserved hot meal! The route then continues through Taf Fechan Forest, following part of the Taff Trail. We’ll continue along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, before reaching our final checkpoint at Talybont-on-Usk. It’s then the final push to the finish line at our TrekFest Village!

Join us at TrekFest 2020 and explore the Brecon Beacons National Park by foot!

We just wanted to say a huge WELL DONE to everyone who took part in TrekFest The Beacons this year. You pushed yourselves outside your comfort zones, took on the TrekFest challenge and achieved something amazing!

Check out the reviews of this years challenge …

This is the first time I’ve done anything like this. The camp site was great, everyone was really helpful and friendly. There were plenty of staff around if you needed to ask anything. The barbecue was good and there was plenty of it. The challenge was a tough one but the checkpoints were well staffed and again they were really supportive and encouraging, as were the marshals along the route. We got a great welcome when we crossed the finish, it was an amazing feeling! People were still coming over the finish line hours later and the reception for each and everyone of them was great. I would recommend the organisation to anyone. It was a fantastic experience and the service was first class. Thank you for a superb weekend. Barbara

I just completed the 50km Brecon challenge with GAC and found the whole thing exceptionally well organised and executed. I’ll definitely be doing more challenges with them in the future. Highly recommended. Chris

FANTASTIC Weekend, well organised, great and helpful information before the event. great food, checkpoints well stocked staff friendly and helpful. I will definitely be doing another event. already signed up for the Peaks. Mikala

“It was a fantastic experience and the service was first class.”

Just completed the Trekfest Beacons 25k, and have to say It was excellent, from the time we arrived on Friday until we left Sunday everything was superb and well organised. I would defiantly recommend GAC to anyone wanting to take part in this type of event. I am already looking forward to next year’s Trekfest. Thanks GAC Cheryl

Completed the 50K TrekFest The Beacons at the weekend. A superbly organised event from registration to finish. Clearly marked routes, great facilities at the village and checkpoints and helpful staff always on hand. I’m now planning my next adventure! 😎 Richard

What an awesome adventure. Really enjoyed it and I am super impressed with how well organised it was and how ace all of the team were, thank you. 6 star service 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 Carrie

“From the time we arrived on Friday until we left Sunday everything was superb and well organised.”

Took part in the Trekfest Brecon Beacons 25km challenge. The event was incredibly well organised, staff were very friendly and it was amazing! would very much recommend, as I will be returning for another Trekfest myself! Nicola

Completed the Brecon Trek Fest this weekend with my husband. The event was extremely well organised from start to finish. The event ‘village’ had a fun atmosphere and provided an opportunity to meet other participants. We hope to join Global Adventure Challenges for another event soon. Fiona

Trek fest is a great event! We did the 50k and wimped out with the camping (wanted a bath and comfy bed) but the atmosphere and team spirit of the village had a great feeling. All the staff were welcoming and encouraging and to top it all I was very impressed with the catering! already thinking about the next one! thank you! Vikki

“All the staff were welcoming and encouraging and to top it all I was very impressed with the catering!”

25k Pen y Fan trek! Extremely well organised and friendly, supportive team. They filled me with confidence that they had everything covered that all I needed to do was focus on the challenge. Absolutely brilliant and I will definitely be booking more challenges with them. Thank you to the whole team x Carrie

Just completed 50km Brecon Beacons trek. Can’t recommend GAC enough, such a well organised event with supportive marshals and friendly atmosphere. The campsite was amazing, my partner and I enjoyed some delicious bbq food before the big day. Will definitely do another challenge with GAC! Dulcie

In 2017 I completed the Sahara Challenge with Global Adventure Challenges. It was amazing. Yesterday, I completed the 50k Trekfest the Beacons which was technically hard for me making the sense of achievement even greater. Global Adventure Challenges take care of their participants from registration to conclusion. I unreservedly recommend and am looking forward to my next challenge with them. Debbie

How to Choose the Best Hiking Boot for Your Adventure

How Long Will I have To Complete the Challenge?

If you are taking on the 50km trek then you’ll have 17 hours 40 minutes to complete the challenge. If you’re taking part in our 25km trek then you’ll have 8 hours 50 minutes. These times are based on an average walking speed of 3km/h (plus time to rest at checkpoints / food stops), which is highly achievable as long as you put in the correct training beforehand. Remember – this is not a race! Checkpoint timings can be found in the Participant Area of the website.

Will the Route be Marked?

The route will be fully marked with fluorescent arrows along the way. You’ll also be provided with a route guide which contains a map and emergency procedures for you to use as a reference. Our TrekFest event crew will also be supporting you along the way, marshalling the route and sweeping the route after the last walker.

What Will Be Available at The Checkpoints?

Each checkpoint will have an array of tasty snacks (think flapjacks, fruit and other treats!) as well as water and cordial. If you are taking part in our 50km route, then you’ll also be able to enjoy a free hot meal at Checkpoint 2 and a hot drink at Checkpoint 3. You’ll also be greeted by our Event Team at checkpoints – including first aiders.

How to Fuel Your Trekking Challenge

Will I Get A Medal at The Finish Line?

Everyone loves a medal! And our TrekFest finishers medal will not disappoint. You’ll also receive a finishers t-shirt, hot meal and complimentary massage upon crossing the finish line!

It’s then time to chat to fellow trekkers, grab a drink at our TrekFest pub and reflect on your amazing achievements!

For more information, head over to your dedicated Participant Area or give us a call on 01244 676454 and we’ll be more than happy to help! Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram and keep us updated using #TrekFest.

We can’t wait to see you all at the start line, Team GAC

The Brecon Beacons National Park

The Brecon Beacons National Park is home to some of the most beautiful scenery in South Wales, full of grassy moorland, tranquil reservoirs, stunning waterfalls and high mountain plateaus.

There are four distinct regions within the National Park. Mynydd Du; the most westerly and most remote section of the park, Fforest Fawr; a series of isolated hills, the Brecon Beacons; home to the highest peak in South Wales – Pen y Fan and then the Black Mountains; a group of old red sandstone hills.

The Brecon Beacons National Park is the perfect location if you love the outdoors, with an array of different trails for walkers, runners, mountain bikers and cyclists. It is the perfect location for the ultimate trekking challenge!
